The monks of Mt St Bernard Abbey, a community of 25 men, are opening the first Trappist brewery in the UK. For their historic, counter-cultural lifestyle to survive, the venture must succeed. But with more than half of the monks aged over 80 years old, time isn’t on their side. As the monks reflect on spirituality, ageing and the end of life, the number of burials in the Abbey graveyard continues to grow. Filmed by director Nick Hamer over 12 months, Outside the City intimately documents this cloistered community; a group of men who have given up everything in pursuit of an ideal, capturing the fragility of life, death, and the search for a perfect brew, along the way.
