Pedro Almodóvar’s 20th feature is an adaptation of three interrelated short stories by Nobel prize winner Alice Munro (‘Chance’, ‘Soon’ and ‘Silence’). Following the death of her husband, Julieta begins searching for her estranged daughter, who inexplicably ran away from home when she was 18. Julieta writes her a long letter, trying to explain events that affected her and their family, as a way of figuring out how guilt and the unfathomable mystery of life leads some people to abandon those they love. Echoing the great colour 1950s melodramas of Douglas Sirk, as well as the quieter explorations of identity of Krzysztof Kieślowski, this classically Almodóvarian portrait of loss and broken motherhood is painted in bold primary colours. Featuring regular collaborators Darío Grandinetti (Talk to Her) and Rossy de Palma ('Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown', 'Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!', 'Broken Embraces'), ‘Julietta’ is classic Almodóvar.
