French auteur Arnaud Desplechin continues his fruitful collaboration with leading man Mathieu Amalric in this sly and humorous drama.
Twenty-one years ago, Carlotta ran away from her filmmaker lover Ismael. Then, out of the blue, she returns. But Ismael (Mathieu Amalric) has rebuilt his life with Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and working on his next feature when Carlotta (Marion Cotillard) reappears. As Ismael’s trials and tribulations unfurl, so too do those of his fictional protagonist, the idle, funny and reckless diplomat Ivan Dédalus (Louis Garrel).
Playful, irreverent and with a fabulous cast, this is French cinema at its wittiest.
