Adèle Haenel ('Portrait of a Lady on Fire', '120BPM') leads the cast of Aude Léa Rapin’s captivating feature debut, which grapples with the legacy of the Bosnian conflict through the prism of a possible supernatural happening.
Joachim (Jonathan Couzinié) is accosted by a stranger on a Paris street, claiming him to be the reincarnation of Zoran, a Bosnian soldier who happened to die on the very day that Joachim was born. Recounting the story to his journalist friend Alice (Haenel), both feel there is something in this and set off with a small film crew to investigate. Drawing on the found footage sub-genre, the road movie and skilfully navigating the sensitivities of a conflict whose ghosts still feel all-too-present, Rapin’s involving film marks a departure from most films dealing with this subject. The result is a compelling exploration of Europe’s recent past.
