Set in the neutral territory of Stockholm during the First World War, ‘Dark Journey’ finds Vivien Leigh playing a spy whose activities hide a complex identity.
Madeleine (Leigh) is a Swiss citizen who travels Europe gathering information for the Germans. But unbeknown to them, she carries on a second life as a double agent for the French and is charged with identifying the head of Germany’s spy network. Victor Saville’s drama (he would also direct Leigh in ‘Storm in a Teacup’ in the same year) skilfully balances thrills with romance. Leigh is captivating, with Conrad Veidt convincing as her love interest.
