Dirk Bogarde is the perfect lady killer in this portrait of a man whose desire for wealth sees him kill for it.
Few British stars of the 1950s were as dashing as Dirk Bogarde. He could have opted for playboy characters in popcorn entertainments, but instead chose more complex roles that explored more complex characters. He does play a playboy here, Edward Bare. But Edward’s desire for the comforts of life leads him to kill his first wife and then make plans to despatch his second. With a support cast that includes Margaret Lockwood and Kay Walsh, this is a superior British thriller.
