Pedro Almodóvar’s riveting murder mystery delves into the past of two men haunted by events from their childhood.
While looking for his next project, acclaimed filmmaker Enrique Goded (Fele Martínez) is approached by an actor who claims to be Ignacio Rodriguez (Francisco Boira), his childhood friend. He gives Enrique his semi-autobiographical script chronicling their adolescence, which results in the director recalling his youth at a Catholic boarding school. The script weaves the past and present as it follows a transvestite performer (Gael García Bernal) coming to terms with past events. Timelier than ever, Almodóvar’s exploration of one individual’s grappling with their identity finds the director delivering one of his most understated dramas, while García Bernal is sensational amongst an excellent cast.
