Two-time Palme d’Or winners Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne ('Rosetta', ‘The Child’) collaborate for the first time with an Oscar-winning actor, Marion Cotillard, in this raw portrait of a woman stripped of her dignity when she loses her job.
A world away from her appearances in Hollywood blockbusters like ‘Inception’, ‘Contagion’, ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Allied’, Cotillard plays Sandra who, after returning to work following a period on sick leave, is informed by her boss that she is to lose her job. The company she works for needs to make cuts and when asked whether to choose to keep their bonus or make Sandra redundant, they chose the latter. Now, Sandra has just one weekend to convince her colleagues to change their minds, which involves her traveling door to door, making each worker confront their decision.
Nominated for both the Palme d'Or and a BAFTA, the Dardennes’ film is a profoundly poignant social realist drama.
