Dario Argento took the horror genre into the operatic realm with his visually dazzling tale of a cursed dance school.
One of the filmmakers most closely associated with the giallo style that dominated Italian horror films in the 1960s and 1970s, Argento (‘The Bird with the Crystal Plumage’, ‘Deep Red’) shifted gear for the first in a series of films dominated by elaborate set-pieces and a fascination with ancient witchcraft. The story unfolds in a creepy dance school in Germany’s Black Forest. American dancer Suzy arrives at the school but soon becomes aware of an otherworldly presence lurking in the shadows. As the body count rises, Suzy becomes involved in an increasingly labyrinthine tale of murder, black magic and madness. Though recently remade with an all-star cast by ‘Call Me By Your Name’s’ Luca Guadagnino, Argento’s version remains the one to see..
