Scottish writer-director Scott Graham’s debut feature 'Shell' is a richly poetic drama as well as an engrossing study of physical and emotional isolation - set at a petrol station on a lonely road in the Highlands. The title character, teenager Shell (Chloe Pirrie), mans the station with her emotionally distant father Pete (Joseph Mawle), her only other contact coming from passing drivers – some regulars, others only travelling through the desolate terrain. After her mother deserted them years ago Shell is devoted to to her father, perhaps too much so, as Graham reveals, in this powerful portrait of life on the margins of society. This hushed and haunting coming-of-age drama won several awards, including a British Independent Film Award.
