Palme d’Or winner 1996.
Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn) lives in London with her sullen street-sweeper daughter. Her brother (Timothy Spall) has a successful photography business and now lives on a more salubrious street. Perhaps embarrassed by her, he hasn’t invited Cynthia round for over a year. As a result, she feels lonely and isolated. However, all that is about to change as Hortense (Jean-Marianne Baptiste), who lives on the other side of town, has embarked on a search for her real mother.
Mike Leigh’s characteristically detailed study of family life is, by turns, hilarious and moving.
