Michelangelo Antonioni's first film in colour remains a bold and uncompromising vision of modern society. A continuation of the themes of alienation and urban decay that permeated his earlier trilogy (L'Avventura, La Notte and L'Eclisse), 'Red Desert' once again stars the director's muse Monica Vitti, who vacillates between the cool affections her husband (Carlo Chionetti) and the advances of his business partner (Richard Harris), against the backdrop of a stark, industrial landscape.
