As 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', Tarantino's 9th film, opens in our cinemas, rediscover this cult classic from the director.
Blaxploitation star Pam Grier plays the eponymous heroine, an air attendant who brings money into the country for Samuel L. Jackson’s ruthless arms dealer Ordell Robbie. She gets pinched and so begins a complex sting operation where it’s never quite clear who has the upper hand. Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda add complications to the mix as Ordell’s old prison-mate and mouthy girlfriend, while Michael Keaton’s FBI agent Ray Nicolette (who reappeared in Steven Soderbergh’s 1998 Leonard adaptation ‘Out of Sight’) and Michael Bowen’s cop spend most of their time trying to find out what the hell is going on.
The dialogue is ripe, the imagery rich, the narrative slips back and forth in time and it’s all controlled brilliantly by Tarantino.
