Alice Rohrwacher’s 2011 feature debut is a compelling drama set amongst a close-knit a Catholic community deep in the south of Italy.
13-year-old Marta struggles to settle in to an unfamiliar city after a decade growing up in Switzerland. Bright-eyed, restless and feeling like an outsider, she clashes with her family and Sunday School teacher as she begins to question the tenets of the Catholic Church. Wanting to make her own decisions and set against the rigid rules of a girl’s Confirmation, Marta's journey is traced through a series of subtle sequences choreographed by Alice Rohrwacher – the writer-director behind ‘The Wonders’ and Cannes-winning ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ – in this extraordinary feature debut.
