If we could communicate with lifeforms from another planet what would we say? More to the point, how would we say it? That’s the starting point of this rapturous and visually dazzling Oscar-nominated drama.
Large spacecraft have landed at 12 locations around the world. In America, unable to understand the craft’s occupants, the army drafts in linguist Louise Bank (Amy Adams) and scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) to translate the aliens’ message. When Louise finds a breakthrough in comprehension she also starts to experience a blurring of time that may prove deadly.
Denis Villeneuve ('Sicario', 'Prisoners') uses his usual signature sound-design to strong effect as we inhabit the spacecraft and he turns up the tension.
